Birch Bell

A handful of records scattered
across the county for this species.&nbsp; It
is hard to account for its scarcity; the larvae feed on the catkins of several common
tree species.

Common and relatively widespread,
albeit constrained somewhat by the distribution of its main foodplant, birch (alder is also used).&nbsp; It is
probably under-recorded in the upland west of the county.&nbsp; That said, it is probably the most frequently recorded of the
various <i>Epinotia</i> species that feed on birch.&nbsp; The vast majority of the records are of
adults to light, but this species can readily be found as a larva, the
spring/early summer generation of adults feeding in catkins in winter/early
spring, and the late summer generation in leaf-rolls in early summer.

Small Spruce Bell

The specific name suggests a
birch-feeder, but it is actually associated with spruces.&nbsp; Few records, with the recent ones being from
Berrow (2006), Chedington Woods (2010), Burnham-on-Sea (2000) and West Luccombe
(1997, 2000).&nbsp; It may be worth searching
some of the upland spruce plantations in the county for this species.
