Light Orange Underwing

An Aspen specialist of open woodland, whose range has declined nationally to the extent it is now largely restricted to southern England (but not the south-west). Historically considered to be a rarity in the county, it has been recorded only once in recent years, at Merryfield Airfield. It flies around the Aspen foodplant in sunshine. Orange Underwing is very similar, so great care must be taken with identification.

Early Tooth-striped

Scarce and local in gardens, common, sometimes abundant in woodland.&nbsp; Most common in the Blackdowns, Quantocks and the wooded fringes of Exmoor.&nbsp; Oddly scarce if not absent from much of the county from the Mendips northwards.

Orange Underwing

Very local, but under-recorded, both as a day-flier and because the adults fly very early in the year.&nbsp; Associated with birches, the largest populations seem to be around Shapwick and Ham Wall.&nbsp; Surprisingly few records from the Blackdowns and Exmoor.
